Zidane: "The team's performing to a really high standard"

NEWS | 12/12/2020

"We put in a terrific performance, pressed high up, hounded them and kept the tempo up", declared the boss.
Real Madrid claimed victory in the derby and Zinedine Zidane reflected on the keys to the game at full-time in the media room at the Alfredo di Stefano: “We produced a great performance from start to finish, especially when you consider that they on a 26-game unbeaten run. We put in an excellent performance, pressed high up, hounded them and we kept the tempo up in the second half. What the players did out there tonight against that opposition means a great deal to me as the coach”.

“That was all about our commitment. There's no such thing as an easy game here. You always have to win and today everyone did really well out there. That's now three games in a row in which we’ve put points on the board and done so in great fashion. We've got to keep this up, we can't go celebrating anything because we haven't done anything just yet, but we can be satisfied with our performance and we now look forward to Tuesday night's game”

No chances afforded
“That's true, there was only the cross that Saúl header. We afforded them very few chances. When you haven't got the ball, you have to defend really well and we did just that, particularly the wide players with our wingers and the two wing-backs performing really well. When we were in possession, what can you say? Because with Kroos, Modric, Karim, with all of them, possession was vital tonight. The team is performing to a really high standard”.

Set-piece goal
“Casemiro said that and I'm delighted that he did because it's true. We don't work on them much on the training ground because we haven't got all that much time, but we did look at it in a video session and it's ended up getting us a goal. We can be pleased and the players in particular because it's good to score goals from set-pieces from time to time”.

The players believe in what they do and know that all together we can do a lot of good things.

“We've improved a lot of things. Tonight's performance was also the result of what we've done over the last week. We began at Sevilla, we qualified against Borussia and tonight we put on another great performance. We competed well from the first minute right until the end. We're not going to celebrate anything because we haven't won anything yet, but we can be happy about it. We have to be satisfied and pleased with our good work”.

The best week yet
“It's been a good week, with three great wins. I'm thrilled for the players because they have fought for it. They're the ones who go out on the pitch. They always believe in what they do and when you pull it off it's a great feeling. Now we have to keep it up, rest up, and we play again on Tuesday, so there's not much time. We're going to enjoy today, but we have a game on Tuesday and we have to think about that now”.

Player rotations
“I'm going to keep thinking the same way. I believe in all my players. During this specific period of three games we haven't made many changes, but that doesn't change anything. The players fight and I can count on them all. Some players get less playing time, but I'm going to use them all because you all win together. And the players know that”.

Did you feel hurt?
“The important thing for us is that we believe in what we're doing. The players are aware that there are going to be tough moments over the course of the season, but they believe in what they do. They know that all together we can do a lot of good things as a team and we've shown that tonight. We've proved to everyone that Madrid are capable of performing well. I'm delighted because, as you say, there are things that do hurt you, but they also make you stronger. The criticism is a part of football, you've got to put up with it, but the players have got the character to overcome it and that's what you get from this team”.
