The team beat Hungary's Videoton in the two-legged final
Today marks 35 years since Real Madrid lifted their first ever UEFA Cup. On the 22nd of May 1985, the Whites clinched the title at the Santiago Bernabéu against Hungarian side Videoton. In the first game, the madridistas set themselves well on the way to victory with a 0-3 thanks to goals by Míchel, Santillana and Valdano. That was enough to take the trophy, despite losing 0-1 in the return leg.

The madridistas knocked out Wacker Innsbruck, Rijeka, Anderlecht, Tottenham and Inter Milan on the way to the final. It was a historic competition that took in three unforgettable Santiago Bernabéu comebacks. The first came when the Whites thrashed Rijeka 3-0 having lost the first leg 3-1. The second was even more spectacular, overturning an initial 3-0 against Anderlecht with a 6-1 thrashing in Madrid. Finally, Inter went 2-0 up in the semi-finals, but were unable to stop the madridistas winning 3-0 in the second leg to progress to the showpiece event. On an individual level, Santillana was the team's leading scorer with 5.
