After ten minutes, Rodrygo was on the receiving end of a big tackle by Joaquin in the opposition half. Kroos delivered the resulting free kick into the area and Casemiro headed it in, but VAR ruled it out as the Brazilian was adjudged to be offside. The home side responded, and Courtois had to be alert to prevent the ball from going straight in from a corner. The intensity did not drop, Mendy and Rodrygo were looking to get in behind, although it was Casemiro who tried his luck from distance in the 38th minute, but the sides went in at half time goalless.
The Whites turned up the heat in the second half and the chances came thick and fast. Casemiro sent the ball through to Rodrygo whose shot forced Masip to make a diving save. Ramos tried to fire in a header following a corner, showing the hunger the team had to get ahead. Around the hour mark, Isco rifled a shot in from the edge of the box which went over the crossbar.
The goal comes at last
On 66’ Rodrygo crossed in superbly for Benzema but his finish was wide of the mark. Lucas Vázquez came on the give Zidane’s side the attacking guile they needed. On minute 78, Kroos crossed in for Nacho who connected with his head to beat a helpless Masip. The Whites had to grind the result out, as Valladolid threw everything at them and even got a goal that was later ruled out. After a tough night, Real Madrid managed to come away from the José Zorrilla as leaders of LaLiga.
