NEWS | 05/11/2019 | Javier Vázquez | PHOTOGRAPHER: Helios de la Rubia“We're going into this game full of excitement and a sense of responsibility”, said the Whites' coach.
“We need our fans, they're always with us because they always want to see their team play well and win games. I'd ask the fans to be behind us at the difficult moments during games too. We can't always come flying out the blocks from minute one, we need our people to back us until the very end”.
Fight for qualification
“We always play with the same idea and the same attitude. The next game is the most important one for us. We know the situation we're in and what we have to do. I'm not worried about whether or not it's a final because all we have to do is focus on putting in a great performance. The fans and the people behind us want us to win it, put on a good display and pick up the three points that effectively seal qualification”.
“My opinion is the same as yours. VAR as a system is a positive thing, something brought in to improve our sport. Obviously, I also see certain things happen which are different from one day to the next, it doesn't match up. We have to take the referee's interpretation into account too. I understand everyone is doing their jobs to the best of their ability and everyone can make mistakes. I'm not happy because I saw a hand-ball the other day. We have to accept other people's mistakes. I hope there are less and less mistakes and controversy. VAR is there to make everything more clear and it's not doing that at the moment”.
Bale gets Wales call-up
“We want the player to be fit, the issue is that's he's not ready to be back in full training yet. We'll see how he goes from day to day. His country has called him up and has the right to do so. It's a FIFA fixture and we won't get involved. The player wants to get back fit, we mustn't doubt his motives. He's the one who suffers first and foremost. We'll see how we go this week and then decide if he's ready or not to go with his country, but at the moment he's not. He has to go, because he's been called up. We'll see what happens. I would like to have had Bale back with us so this wasn't a discussion, but he's got a little way to go yet”.
“Right now, Bale is not available. That's all I can say, I'm not sure what the conversation was with his national coach. All I'm concerned about is getting him back fit. We're not happy because I want to have a full fit squad with everyone available. That's not been the case lately”.
“It doesn't bother me. I'm telling our fans that it's the player who suffers first and foremost. I feel like he wants to be back with us. The fans should look at the positives too, they say I want him to go in January, but that's nonsense. Everyone is entitled to talk about me and the job I'm doing, but they shouldn't put words in my mouth. I want Gareth to stay until the end of the season. Against Bruges, he was unavailable and nothing has changed. He's still not ready. We'll see if he can get back fit and ready to go away with his national side”.
Relationship between Bale and Zidane
“We say hello to each other every day. I love my players. We can't be as close to all of them but I've never had any problem with Bale. The difficulties came over the summer when he could have left. The situation now is that he's here, he's a good player and you guys should stop focusing on the fact he's left before the end of games because the same happened when I played, I could leave before the end. The important thing is that he's there when the game starts and at half-time to support the team. Everyone is entitled to do that, they're all behind the team and want to see us win things”.
“It's a similar thing. He's still not available, he's got some discomfort. It's assessing him on a daily basis. I can't tell you exactly what's wrong with him, to be perfectly honest. I hope he comes back quickly, I want my players available to me, even if that makes it harder to name a squad, I prefer it that way”.
“The player needs to decide on his future, what he wants to do. At the moment, he's a PSG player and we'll see what happens in the future. He has always said that his dream is to one day play for Real Madrid”.
