Real Madrid were unable to pick up a positive result on their last LaLiga outing. The Whites lost to Real Sociedad in a game in which they took the lead thanks to a Brahim goal. However, the home side, who played for 50 minutes with numerical superiority after the sending off of Vallejo, came from behind to win 3-1. Zidane's team came out pressing very high. The good start was translated into a masterpiece by the Malaga-born player, who received the ball mid-way in to the opposition half, beat two defenders and slotted past Rulli after cutting back spectacularly inside the area, leaving Llorente on the floor (6').
With qualification for Europe at stake, the home side were quick to respond. Courtois kept out Merino and Oyarzabal's chances. La Real went in search of an equalizer and Oyarzabal looked to have got it with 21 minutes on the clock, but the referee ruled it out for offside after consulting VAR. They did make it 1-1 five minutes later, when Merino finished off a good passing move for the side from San Sebastian. After the equailser, the match was end to end. Benzema came close to getting the second, with a shot from the edge of the area, and then Isco, with a strike that Rulli kept out. In the 39th minute, Vallejo was sent off for deflecting the ball with his hand inside the area after a shot by Willian José. Courtois saved the penalty by the Brazilian striker but Madrid were reduced to ten men.
The Whites’ changed things around at the back during the break, with Casemiro moving to centre back and Zidane’s side persisted in attack despite being a man down. The first real moment of danger in the second half came from Asensio. Little by little however, it was Real Sociedad who took control. Zubeldia and Merino fired in warning shots from outside the box, before Zaldua blasted a header into the back of the net to secure the hosts’ second goal (57’). With Modric entering the fray, Real Madrid sought a reaction. Benzema came close to levelling the tie with some lethal play in the box on 65’.
Two minutes later, Real Sociedad turned the screw with another goal. Oyarzabal struck the post before Barrenetxea finished to make it 3-1. Real Madrid refused to give up despite their clear disadvantage. Lucas Vázquez and Vinicius Jr. both came off the bench to try and shake the game up but Real Sociedad took yet another chance to punish the Whites on the counter. Januzaj nearly scored their fourth on 85’, but he hit the crossbar. The game ended 3-1 and Real Madrid now turn their focus to next weekend’s season finale against Real Betis at the Bernabéu.
