The first half ended goalless and although Real Madrid dominated possession, good defensive work by the visitors limited the clear-cut openings. The best chance came with just 13 minutes played. Asensio crossed towards the front post, Lucas Vázquez set it back first time to Marcelo and the Brazilian's shot went over. At the other end, Athletic didn’t create much danger. The most notable effort came from a corner that Raúl García headed in to the hands of Keylor Navas after 42 minutes.
The opening goal
The second half began at a fast pace and Real Madrid took the lead with 47 minutes gone. A cross from Asensio was met by the head of Benzema to make it 1-0. The fifth consecutive game in which the Frenchman has scored. The Whites had chances to extend their lead with two clear opportunities, the first after Modric cut in to the area and crossed, Marcelo let the ball go and the shot from Kroos hit a defender on the way through. From the resulting corner, Asensio delivered and a snap shot from Marcelo was just off target.
Real Madrid came out after the break keen to put the result beyond the visitors' reach as early as possible and had another chance to extend their lead in the 56th minute. Kroos switched the play out to Lucas Vázquez, whose pull-back was hit first time by Benzema, who was left to rue his luck as his effort shaved the upright. However, the Frenchman made no mistake in the 76th minute. Modric swung over a corner kick and Benzema pounced on Herrerín's error to nod the ball home and hit his seventh goal in his last five outings.
The closing minutes of the game served up several moments that got the madridista fans off their feet. Firstly, in the 87th minute, Brahim produced a fine piece of skill to nutmeg Lekue, only for Herrerín to pull off a stunning save to prevent what would have been a superb goal. Next up, in the 87th minute, Keylor Navas produced a fantastic stop to keep out a powerful headed effort from Williams. Last but not least, Benzema completed his hat-trick in injury time as he capped off a stellar individual performance. Herrerín failed to clear his lines and Bale laid the ball off to the French forward, whose chipped effort sailed into the empty net and saw him claim the matchball and bring his tally for the season to 30.
