Damir Skomina ultimately appointed referee of Ajax v Real Madrid game

Damir Skomina is set to referee Wednesday's Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie between Ajax and Real Madrid at the Johan Cruyff Arena (9pm CET). It will be the ninth time that Slovenian official he has overseen a game involving the Whites in this competition.

In the 2010/11 season, he was the man in the middle for Madrid's curtain-raiser against Ajax (2-0), whilst he was also in charge of the team's last 16 second-leg meeting with Lyon at the Bernabéu (3-0). In the 2012/13 campaign, he oversaw the first game of the group stage against Manchester City at the Bernabéu (3-2) and he also officiated the quarter-final clash in the 2013/14 season against Borussia in Dortmund (2-0).

In the 2014/15 campaign, he refereed two home games, against Basel in the group stage (5-1) and the round of 16 second-leg match against Schalke (3-3). The following season, he was appointed as referee of the semi-final first-leg encounter against Manchester City at the Bernabéu (1-0). Meanwhile, the last time he took charge of the Whites was also at the Santiago Bernabéu, in the 2016/17 round of 16 first-leg contest between Real Madrid and Napoli (3-1).

UEFA have appointed Polish official Szymon Marciniak as the VAR.
