“Bale took a harsh blow and played the entire second half with a swollen ankle. He put in a great performance and I'm very happy with him. What's more, he can play in any position. That's the sort of personality one aspires to when they pull on this shirt. Same goes for Lucas Vázquez, who played at left-back”.
“You have to give credit to these players, today they put in a great shift and overcame a lot of things”.
“They all showed true character to get themselves out of tricky situations. His first goal was spectacular and he was at the heart of the second goal too. He created some great play, made space, even worked hard in defence... He really played brilliantly”.
On his coaching role
“The club has to focus on what is best for Real Madrid and the rest is just details. We pressed high up the pitch today and got the ball off them on quite a few occasions. As a coach, you want everything to go perfectly, but at the end of the day it is the character that the players show which proves crucial”.
“He is a fantastic player, we’re relying on him, just like all of the players. Today we could not make certain changes, that was down to what the game required, people came off with knocks”.
