Lopetegui: “The only thing on my mind right now is lifting my players' mood"

“The third goal killed us off and we were punished”, added the coach.
Julen Lopetegui spoke in the press room at the Camp Nou. The Real Madrid coach said: "A defeat is always hard and against Barcelona even more so. We had the opportunity to turn it around, creating clear chances to draw and win the game in the second half. In the first they were superior and in the second we changed things and were better".
"We got into the game but it wasn’t to be. In the end we were unlucky, picking up injuries. The third goal killed us off and when the match opened up we were punished as they were more forceful".
"The result doesn’t reflect the game, but it’s like that. In the first half we had chances, but the penalty set us back. In the second half we hit the woodwork and had a lot of chances. It wasn’t to be. We can only blame ourselves for not having had the ball and not making them run more. With the score at 3-1 the match was effectively over".
"I'm sad and it's a tough one, but it’s only October and I have the strength to think that we can turn this around and I have confidence in the group. Little by little, the players are finding form and we’ve had a lot of injuries. I can continue to lead this group without a doubt".

"The responsibility ultimately lies with the coach, but we all win and lose together. I still believe that it's early days in terms of the season and despite today being a sad day, I'm certain that this team will fare better in the second half of the season than we have in the first".

Picking the team up
"A lack of a clinical streak has proved really detrimental in many games. We have to dust ourselves down, believe and keep going. That's the only solution to this. The only thing on my mind right now is lifting my players' mood".

"At the start of the second half we were in control, but if you're not clinical and don't take the chances that come your way, the opposition will take theirs and there's not much you can do about it. I can't criticise anyone. I believe in this group of players and this team. We're all down right now, but I'd like to see where we are come April or May. I want to get the players to believe and in the last month we've been through a lot. I'm certain that this team will offer a different account of itself, just as we did in spells today".

Would you understand it if you were sacked?
"I'm not the one who makes the decisions. I've already explained how I feel and it's now down to other people".
