In the 1991/1992 season, the Romanian midfielder scored a hat-trick against Athletic at the Santiago Bernabéu.
This week, in Historic Goals, the star is Gica Hagi. The midfielder joined Real Madrid in 1990 from Steaua Bucharest. He excelled in Romania due to his great quality and confirmed it in Madrid, where he is remembered for his technical ability and long-range shooting with an impressive left foot.
In matchweek 22 of the 1991/92 season the Whites welcomed Athletic Bilbao to the Santiago Bernabéu. Real Madrid won 5-0 thanks to Hagi's hat-trick and goals from Hierro and Hugo Sánchez. The Romanian footballer got the first three goals of the match. In the first, he beat the Bilbao goalkeeper with a powerful left-footed shot from inside the area after great team play. For the second, he received high ball from Butragueño and finished on the volley. And he saved the best for last. The third was a solo effort after receiving in the opposition half, he ran with the ball, getting it on to his favoured foot before letting fly with his left boot from the edge of the area.
Gheorghe Hagi wore the Real Madrid shirt in the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons, where he played 84 games and scored 20 goals. Amongst his honours, the Spanish Super Cup stands out.
