Real Madrid were doing well thanks to their high pressing and managed to bag a second goal on the half hour mark. A spectacular piece of play from Asensio, who beat two defenders to then back heel the ball to Marcelo, who gladly set up Cristiano Ronaldo to tap in with a neat touch. Despite the strong start, the Whites continued with their efforts. Modric passed through the eye of a needle to Cristiano Ronaldo who beat Rulli in the one-on-one to lay on a goal for Benzema. His rifled shot took a wicked deflection off Raúl Navas to send the ball out for a corner.
A Majestic finish from Kroos
Real Madrid went on the attack yet again. Ramos headed the ball backwards on 33’ and when Cristiano Ronaldo waited to score again, Zurutuza managed to get in the way, sending the ball onto the post of his own goal. It was just a matter of time before the hosts made it three, and they did so just a minute later. Lucas Vázquez picked up the ball on the edge of the box, sliding it over to Kroos. The German sent the Bernabéu into a frenzy as he sent a shot goalwards with the inside of his right foot as he has done so many times for Real Madrid. The ball flew perfectly into the back of the net.
The Whites were absolutely flying and further extended their lead in the 37th minute. Toni Kroos whipped over a corner and Cristiano Ronaldo leaped highest to nod the ball powerfully home and claim his second of the night. This is how things remained up until the break, although the hosts could have gone in even further ahead after carving out another gilt-edged opportunity. With 40 minutes on the clock, Marcelo conjured up a fine piece of skill in which he evaded the attentions of three visiting defenders down the left flank before cutting the ball back to Marco Asensio, who managed to get a shot away, only for Raúl Navas to once again clear the ball off the line.
Cristiano Ronaldo completes his hat-trick
With one eye on Wednesday night's game, Real Madrid took their foot off the gas and Real Sociedad sought to capitalise on this but Juanmi was denied when his headed effort struck the woodwork. Zinedine Zidane looked to freshen things up and introduced Mateo Kovacic and Isco in place of Luka Modric and Lucas Vázquez in the 63rd minute. Ten minutes later, Gareth Bale entered the fray after replacing Asensio and in the very next move, Jon Bautista reduced the arrears for the visitors. In the 80th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo completed his hat-trick, pouncing on the loose ball after Rulli had parried Bale's shot. The scoring was rounded off three minutes later when Asier Illarramendi steered the ball home. Real Madrid's focus now turns to the showdown against PSG.
