Real Madrid pushed right to the end but were ultimately unable to get the better of Leganés, who scored twice, once in either half, to knock the Whites out of the Copa del Rey. The home team dominated the game but time and again came up against well-regimented opposition. It was Leganés who would fire off the first warning shot, when Beauvue struck a whipped free-kick on 5’ which clipped the outside of the post.  Then, with their next foray into the Madrid half, just after the half-hour mark, the visitors levelled the tie with a long-range effort by Eraso that flew into the top corner to leave Casilla helpless.

That's how things remained until the break, but there were still 45 left to seal a place in the next round. Madrid needed just two minutes after the restart to bring the scores level on the night and go back in front in the tie. Lucas Vázquez picked out a cute through ball, and an exquisite Benzema touch lifted the ball over Champagne and into the back of the net. The celebrations were short-lived though, as Eraso swung in a corner with 56 minutes gone and Gabriel rose to head Leganés back in front.

Zidane brought on Carvajal and Modric for Achraf and Llorente, looking for more bite in attack as the Whites’ went in search of a goal to see them through. Isco tried his luck in the 73rd minute, but his shot from inside the area went over. In the 81st minute, the Whites had a double chance to put things right. Lucas Vázquez pulled back for Benzema whose shot from the penalty spot was kept out by Champagne. The Whites kept on pushing and soon after a Lucas Vázquez cross was met by Mayoral, who had come on for Isco, but the ball was centimeters from finding its way through.

Until the end
The Whites’ siege was now more evident than ever. Three minutes later Lucas Vázquez again crossed, meeting the head of Ramos who forced the Leganés keeper in to a full-stretch save. The team fought until the end but couldn’t find a way past Champagne and as a result don’t make the draw for the next round.
