"2016 was a dream year for me, I wish to thank my Real Madrid and international teammates", stated the Whites' forward.
Cristiano Ronaldo continues to amass the accolades as the Whites' forward clinched the 2016 Quinas de Oro award, a distinction bestowed on the Portuguese player of the year. Ronaldo took the accolade, beating off competition from his club teammate, Pepe, and Sporting CP custodian, Rui Patricio, in the votes cast by a panel of coaches, players and supporters. The award was presented at the Portuguese Football Awards Ceremony, which took place on Monday at the Estoril Conference Centre.

Upon collecting the accolade from the Portuguese national team coach, Fernando Santos, Ronaldo declared, "2016 was a dream year for me, both on an individual and team level. At Real Madrid we won some major titles, including the Champions League. Meanwhile, with the Portuguese national team we lifted the European Championship crown for the first time and it was very special because it was a trophy that was missing from my collection. I want to once again thank my Real Madrid and international teammates, as well as all of the Portuguese supporters, who gave us the confidence to win the European Championships. Thanks to everyone".

This distinction takes its place alongside the numerous awards Ronaldo collected in the wake of a stunning 2016, the most notable of which were the Ballon d'Or and The Best award. During the course of the year, he hit 55 goals (42 for Real Madrid and 13 for Portugal) en route to lifting the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup with the Whites and the European Championship crown with his national side.

Further accolades
The awards ceremony also saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe pick up the award for the best Portuguese team of the year in the male category and the Premio Prestigio after both players played a part in Portugal's European success.

Quinas de Oro awards ceremony
Headed up by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the Association of Football Coaches and the Players Union, the Quinas de Oro awards ceremony recognises the achievements of the top performing Portuguese men and women across the 11 v 11 game, futsal and beach football during 2016, both in Portugal and abroad. The first edition took place in 2015, which coincided with the FPF's centenary, with Cristiano Ronaldo scooping the award as his country's all-time best player.
