Reared in the Real Madrid academy, Santiago Cañizares established himself as a member of the first team following spells at Elche, Mérida and Celta, where he impressed in his first taste of top-flight action. He was a member of the first-team set-up for four seasons, in which he clocked up 55 appearances and won one European Cup, two league titles and a Spanish Super Cup.

Cañizares was part of the team that clinched the club's seventh European Cup in Amsterdam. That season, the 1997/98 campaign, proved to be his best in terms of appearances during hs Real Madrid career (34). He joined Valencia after calling time on his spell at the club. He was also capped by Spain. He won the Under-16 European Championship in 1986 with La Roja and claimed gold at the Barcelona Olympics.
