Real Madrid-Roma: Women’s Champions League gets underway
Pau Quesada's team play their first game at the Di Stéfano this evening (6:45 pm CEST).
The opening phase of the Women’s Champions League kicks off this evening, as our team gear up to play at the Alfredo Di Stéfano. Roma, the first Italian outfit our team will face in official competition, are the opposition in the tournament curtain-raiser (6:45 pm CEST).
Pau Quesada's side will be looking to start off on the right foot in the tournament, and continue their impressive streak at the Alfredo Di Stéfano, where they've won four from four so far this season: three in the League against Madrid CFF (2-1), Deportivo (4-0) and Levante Badalona (3-0), and one in the Women’s Champions League qualifier against Eintracht (3-0).
Roma
The Italian side are on a fine run of form themselves. Tonight's opponents are on a three-match winning streak, having taken seven victories in eight games so far this season. Their only loss came against Sporting de Portugal (1-2) in the final round of the Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
New format
Tonight sees the first of six games for our team in the new-look opening phase of the competition. Three come at home (Roma, Paris F.C. and Wolfsburg), with three on the road (PSG, Arsenal and Twente). The 18 teams share a single league, with the top four heading straight to the quarter-finals. Those finishing 5th to 12th face a play-off round, and then from the quarters, it's a traditional route to the final.
