Real Madrid’s legendary status began on 13 June 1956 when the team triumphed in the final against Stade de Reims (4-3).
On 13 June 1956, Real Madrid claimed the European Cup for the first time in a memorable clash with Stade de Reims. Paris' Parc des Princes was the scene for a thrilling final, with the French side going 2-0 ahead in the opening minutes. Di Stéfano and Rial pulled level before half-time, but in the 62nd minute Hidalgo struck again for Stade de Reims. The madridistas then wrote their first chapter in the history of their European legacy with a late comeback, courtesy of goals from Marquitos and Rial, who bagged a brace.
In this first edition, Real Madrid kicked off the European Cup against Servette on 8 September 1955 in Geneva. Miguel Muñoz netted Madrid's first goal of the tournament in a 2-0 victory. Their opponents in the ensuing rounds were Partizan and Milan.
