Real Madrid began their quest for their 39th League title. Scariolo's team, more cohesive and accurate from the perimeter, secured their second victory of the week at the Palacio against Dreamland Gran Canaria (81-71). Hezonja was Madrid's top scorer with 13 points and, with a rating of 14, was also one of the standout players, alongside Tavares (8 rebounds and 14), Lyles (10 points and 11) and Krämer (10 and 8).
A flying start for Madrid
The Cape Verdean scored two points in the first play of the game to build confidence. That was how it went during the first quarter. Madrid soon took an 8-point lead, but their opponents were not going to make it easy for them and closed the gap after 5 minutes (8-6). However, KrämerHezonjaCampazzoLlull and Feliz made the difference with their respective three-pointers in the blink of an eye. Almost everything was starting to go right for Scariolo's team.
The Canary Islanders started the second quarter with intensity, which ended in favour of the home side (22-18), very solid in defence and very reliable in attack to achieve a 9-4 run and extend their dominance. Almansa got off to a good start (4 points) on his official debutKrämer and Hezonja were particularly accurate from the perimeter. Abalade joined in to give Madrid their biggest lead of the game so far, +12 (41-29), with three minutes to go before the break. Llull made three assists in the first half and surpassed 2,000 in the ACB, becoming the sixth best passer in the history of the league.
Surprising three-pointers from Llull and Okeke
Real Madrid returned from the locker room with a 44-33 lead and immediately opened up the gap to pull further ahead (51-38). Samar (9 points) and Pelos (13 points) responded for Gran Canaria, but our team adjusted their defence and began to win rebounds. In the final moments, there was another three-pointer from Lull, ten metres from the basket, and two more from Okeke, one of which was a spectacular shot from his own half, on the buzzer, to end the third quarter 71-56.
Scariolo's men managed to keep the result in their favour with good defensive work, forcing Dreamland Gran Canaria to try their luck from the perimeter with little success. With one minute to go, the Italian coach brought on Gunars, who played his first official game as a Real Madrid player and ended the game by scoring from the free throw line. The academy player was part of a solid home victory.
