Real Madrid-Baskonia: last Regular Season match
Chus Mateo's team will finish top if they win and Unicaja lose (6:30pm CEST).
This evening sees Real Madrid close out the Regular Season in the League against Baskonia at the WiZink Center. Our team head into the final game with a chance of finishing top of the table. If they win and Unicaja lose their match against Palencia, they'll move into first. This is the latest chapter in a rivalry between two teams who have crossed paths six times already this season. Last time came in the EuroLeague playoff, a convincing 3-0 victory for our team.
Chus Mateo's boys are playing for the leadership at this stage, while Baskonia are fighting for their place in the playoffs. Incentives on both sides that surely promise a real spectacle at the WiZink Center. Our team will be hoping for a boost following Friday's tough clash in Valencia that sadly resulted in an injury to Deck. But if we know one thing about Madrid, it's their ability to overcome adversity and their strength as a team. Six players are averaging double digits in PIR in this league campaign, led by Tavares, the best defender in the competition for the fourth successive time.
Baskonia are top opposition and come into tonight's game needing to win to be in with a chance of making the quarter-finals (Baxi Manresa must also lose). The key areas lie in limiting three-point percentages, controlling the defensive rebound to cut out quick transition and slowing the pace of the game. Howard, Costello, Miller-McIntyre and Marinkovic, who posed 29 points against UCAM Murcia, are their greatest threats.
Last meeting
Only 12 days ago, Madrid clinched their place in the Final Four at the Buesa Arena when they sealed a 3-0 series win against Baskonia. Our boys averaged almost 98 points per game, breaking the 100-mark in the second and third clash. This will be the seventh time the two teams go head-to-head this season, and the record looks favourable at 5-1. Tonight, all eyes will be on a 28th league win ahead of the playoffs.
