NEWS STORY. 28/05/2022

Real Madrid beat Atlético in Milan in a penalty shoot-out.

On 28 May 2016, Real Madrid clinched their eleventh European Cup. The San Siro in Milan was the scene for a second final against Atlético, which this time would be settled by a penalty shoot-out. Just like in La Décima, Sergio Ramos got the better of the rojiblanca goalkeeper to score the first goal of the game, before Atlético levelled through Carrasco.

The scores remained at 1-1 throughout extra-time and gave way to an unforgettable shootout. Lucas Vázquez, MarceloBale and Ramos all scored from twelve yards before Juanfran's fourth penalty for Atlético came back off the post. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up for the decisive fifth kick and made no mistake, securing La Undécima. The victory saw Zidane win the first of three consecutive Champions League crowns as a coach in what was his debut season in the first-team dugout.

Road to the final
During the 2015/16 campaign, Real Madrid won more games than any other team, while conceding the fewest number of goals. Their Group Stage opponents were PSG, Shakhtar Donetsk and Malmö, before they saw off Roma, Wolfsburg and Manchester City in the knock-outs.
