Real Madrid open Copa del Rey campaign

PREVIEW. 05/01/2022. Alberto Navarro

Ancelotti's charges travel to Alcoyano for the one-legged round-of-32 tie (9:30pm CET).

Tonight sees Real Madrid begin their Copa del Rey campaign with a trip to Alcoyano's El Collao in the round of 32 (9:30pm CET). The fact that this is a one-legged tie means that our team must win on the night to secure a spot in Friday's last-16 draw.

This match sees this demanding first month of 2022 continue for Carlo Ancelotti's troops as they're in action in LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. This contest represents the fourth time that the two sides have locked horns in the Copa del Rey. Madrid overcame Alcoyano at the quarter-final stage in the 1945/46 season and in the round of 32 in the 2012/13 campaign, whilst the Alicante-based outfit came out on top in last season's last-32 bout.

"We begin what's a really important competition for us and the aim is to win it", stated Ancelotti in his pre-match press conference ahead of the opening game in the competition. The Italian coach has named his squad for the trip to a side that are performing well on home soil this term. Indeed, the hosts have tasted defeat just twice in their nine competitive outings this season at El Collao.

Primera RFEF
Alcoyano compete in Group 2 of the Primera División RFEF, where they currently lie in 11th spot with 24 points to their name. The home side have reached this stage of the Copa del Rey after having edged out Levante on penalties in the last round after previously having accounted for Badajoz in a 3-0 away success. Mourad has struck three of the team's six goals in the competition.
