INTERVIEW | 10/08/2018“I think everyone who comes to this club knows how high expectations are, but I'm ready for it”, said the goalkeeper.
Following his unveiling at the Santiago Bernabéu, Thibaut Courtois gave an interview with Realmadrid TV, his first as a new Whites player: “I've been in the game a long time, I'm experienced and I know I am capable of rising to this challenge. I can't wait to start training with my teammates and playing games”.
How does it feel to be presented as a Real Madrid player?
I feel happy and incredibly proud to be part of the best club in the world. It's a real honour.
What do you think about when you see the 13 European Cups?
About how great a club Real Madrid is, because they are the proof that it's the best in the world. I also think about how I'd love to win the European Cup in this shirt.
How does a kid who started out as a left-back end up becoming a goal keeper, and one of the best in the world?
It's simple. My parents and my brothers played a lot of volleyball and when I was little, we had a beach volleyball court. I loved diving around on the floor and that's when you could tell I had it in me. I started as a left-back but we used to rotate the team and I ended up in goal, you could see I had the talent and here I am.
How are you approaching the challenge of coming to Real Madrid?
Full of excitement and hungry to win more trophies and to be competitive. I can't wait. I think everyone who comes to this club knows how high expectations are, but I'm ready for it. I've been in the game a long time, I'm experienced and I know I am capable of rising to this challenge. I can't wait to start training with my teammates and playing games.
What can you bring to Real Madrid and what are you like as a goalkeeper?
I'm a keeper who exudes calm, very confident in the air and I've got good reflexes. Sometimes, due to my height, I can reach places where other goalies might not. I'm experienced and I've played for many titles: when you want to win trophies, you need winners in your team and I think I can do my bit in that regard. I'm here to help the team.
You have very impressive reactions, does that come from training or is it something you're born with?
I've got elements which come to me naturally from when I used to play volleyball, but you can certainly train it too. Ultimately, though, you've either got it in you or you haven't. You can work on it, improve, and I've been lucky to have my reflexes and my height. I consider it very important for me to remain agile.
You're faced with the exciting challenge of winning five trophies, what do you have to do to win them all?
Having high levels of competition within the team is important, everyone should feel valuable and fight for a place. Boasting such a quality squad, beyond the first eleven, is very important because there are so many games, and ultimately we have to approach the season full of excitement. I'm certain the team is ready. I feel good and I can't wait to get going so I can show I'm well prepared.
Lastly, a message for all the madridista fans who will be supporting you.
Hi to all the madridistas. I'm very happy and extremely proud to have joined this great club. I'll give it my all, alongside my teammates, to win titles. I'm going to give everything I've got to this badge and this shirt. Hala Madrid!
