Nápoles - Real Madrid

Navas: "Ramos has got a striker's instinct within him"

NEWS | 07/03/2017 | Javier García (Naples)

"Napoli put us under pressure but we deserved to come through the tie", declared Carvajal.
Keylor Navas highlighted the performance of the Whites' captain in the wake of the side's victory at the Stadio San Paolo: "Ramos is a very important player, he's always there to help us out and we've got to be pleased with the result. He's got a striker's instinct within him, whenever he goes up for corners we have real belief in him and when it comes to headers, he's always got the ability to put the ball where he wants to".

"As a team, we try to do things as best we can. In spells we were a bit unorganised out there, but that wasn't the cause of our poor defending. At other times, we defended very well, we occupied the spaces and covered for each other. There are a lot of positives, whilst there are other things that we can improve on, the same applies to all teams".

Carvajal: "Zidane told us that we needed to show a bit more intensity"
"We were certainly kept busy. Napoli pressed us very well and we failed to read the game a bit better and try to get in behind them with our quick players instead of looking to play through them, because they were really hurting us whenever we conceded possession. We then caught on to how the game was going and we come away with a positive result. Looking back on the tie as a whole, we deserved to progress".

"Second-half improvement"
"At the break, Zidane told us that we needed to show a bit more intensity, up  things a gear and that's what we did. In the second half, after Ramos' goal we showed what we're all about, we kept the ball and got in behind down both flanks. The most important thing is that we're through to the quarter-finals".

The captain
"Sergio Ramos is extremely important for us. He's gone and proved that again here and here's hoping that he continues to pitch in with many more goals".

Marcelo: "There are no easy games in the Champions League"
"We showed that we were able to dig in right until the end and we kept our heads. We talked about things in the dressing room and we managed to get the goals. We know that there are no easy games in the Champions League. Ramos is a warrior, he works really hard and he deserves this. I'm sure he's happy about having scored, but even more so about us progressing to the quarter-finals. As for Morata, he also works really hard, strikers live for goals and when you get one, you have to really celebrate it".

Focused on LaLiga
"Barcelona are very strong rivals, so too are PSG and anything can happen. We're now focusing our attentions on Laliga".

Casemiro: "We've achieved our objective
"We've come here to a difficult place to play, where the opposition really press you and we've achieved our objective of qualifying for the next round. We didn't get off to a good start, but we've got to recognise that this is the Champions League and we were up against a great side. In the second half, we performed well and that's what I take away with me. Zidane knows how to read the game and we all got together and changed things around after the break as we did what he asked of us".

Marcelo: "I'm sure Ramos is happy about having scored, but even more so about us progressing into the quarter-finals".

“Ramos is making history at this club. You have to congratulate him and I’m happy to have him on our side. When we talk about the BBC, we’re talking about the best player in the world, another player with enormous quality and another who has real pace and power. There will always be criticism, but they’re very important players for us. Our aim is to retain the title, we’re pleased to have qualified and now we’ve got to focus on LaLiga”.

Benzema: “The second half was a bit better”
“Napoli are very strong opposition, they put us under real pressure, scored a goal and it was an extremely difficult game; we all had to show resilience. The second half was a bit better and in the end, we got the win and we’re through to the quarters, that’s the most important thing”.

“There’s always a lot of focus on the three of us. We don’t just score goals, we work hard for the team whenever there’s a tough game, they point the finger at us. But we’re a group and when we’re out on the pitch we give it our all, working hard to win and helping our teammates”.

Lucas: "We were able to dig in and turn the game around”
“It was a very tough match. They came out at full throttle and made life very difficult for us. Their early goal put them back in the tie and we struggled to get going, but we showed good resilience and managed to stop them in their tracks with two set pieces. We were able to dig in and turn the game around”.

The draw
“We’re into the quarter-finals, there are five games separating us from the Champions League title and we have to take it match by match and keep working hard. We haven’t got a preference for our quarter-final opponents, we’ll await the draw with the utmost humility and prepare for the games accordingly”.
