From the academy to European champion

Diego López, the goalkeeper who helped Castilla to promotion in the 2004/05 season, made his debut for the Real Madrid first team the following campaign, thanks to his impressive performances right through the club's academy ranks. After three years, during which time he won LaLiga, he moved to Villarreal, where he spent five seasons.

Following his spell at the Castellón-based team and having started the 2012/13 season at Sevilla, the Galician-born goalkeeper returned to Real Madrid in the winter of 2012. In his two further seasons with the club, he carved out a starting berth in LaLiga and added to his madridista trophy haul with La Décima, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
