A harsh penalty decided the game, leaving our team with no chance of a place in the Women´s Champions League quarter-finals.
Real Madrid were unable to get a result in a huge game in the Women's Champions League. Our team lost after being on the receiving end of a controversial penalty, converted by Thiney with 79 minutes gone. The defeat alongside Chelsea's win over Häcken mean Toril's team will not have a place in the tournament's quarter-finals.
Madrid got the game underway at a strong pace and warned of their intentions very early on. With just 4 minutes on the clock, Raso crossed to the back stick but Zornoza could only fire into the side-netting. The French side reacted swiftly, Bourdieu sending her effort inches wide of the post. Our team were controlling the ball, while Paris FC looked to strike on the break. It was Toril's side who enjoyed the best chance of the clash so far, with half an hour gone. Olga unleashed a thunderbolt from distance and only a sublime save by the opposition goalkeeper denied her from opening the scoring.
Harsh penalty decision
The Paris-based team started the second half strongly, enjoying two good chances to take the lead. First, Bourdieu's strike whistled over the crossbar, before Mateo's did the same in the very next move. That was a sign for Madrid to inject greater intensity to the game and Linda, Toletti and Feller all came off the bench to return from injury (57’). The latter could have made it 1-0 moments later, but Nnadozie did well to keep her out. It was an end-to-end affair now and Paris FC had a good chance up the other end, but Misa displayed lightning reflexes to repel Thiney's vicious shot. The French forward did find the net shortly afterwards, though, converting the decisive spot-kick. It was a harsh decision after M. Oroz tangled with Hocine in the box. Our girls were unable to find a leveller and Madrid will not be present in the Champions League quarter-finals.
