Real Madrid slipped to defeat in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie at the Alfredo Di Stéfano. Despite ultimately coming off second best to Barcelona, our team put in a strong performance in which we hit the front through an eighth-minute Olga strike. However, the visitors managed to stage a comeback following a questionable penalty at the start of the second half and a further two goals in the closing stages.

Real Madrid made a high-octane start to the contest and Alberto Toril’s ladies got their noses in front with eight minutes on the clock, when Esther picked out Olga, who fired an effort into the far corner of the net. The home side continued to pour forward and shortly afterwards, Paños saved Athenea’s shot from inside the box. Esther had two more clear-cut chances to have doubled the Whites’ advantage prior to the interval. Firstly, her effort stuck the upright after she brilliantly brought a Zornoza free-kick under her spell and in the very next move, the forward very nearly got the better of Paños.
Controversial second period
The second half began with a penalty conceded by Olga on Graham in an incident that was checked by the VAR system, as Alexia stepped up to level matters on 53’. Our ladies didn’t let their heads drop and came close to regaining the lead in the very next move, but Esther contrived to send her shot over the bar. In the final 10 minutes, Barcelona managed to complete the fightback after Claudia Pina pounced on a deflection in the madridista backline. The visitors struck again in injury time as Alexia made it 3-1 to round off the scoring. The tie will be concluded on 30 March at the Camp Nou in a 6:45pm CET kick-off as one of the two teams will book their place in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals.
