Real Madrid continued their winning start to the season with three points at Anoeta, which keeps their unbeaten run in LaLiga intact with four wins in as many games. Mbappé put the Whites ahead, but on the half-hour mark, Gil Manzano showed Huijsen a straight red card for a challenge on Oyarzábal that he did not review via VAR. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Arda Güler extended Madrid's lead from the French striker's pass before half-time. In the second half, Oyarzabal reduced the deficit from the penalty spot, but the visitors held on to secure the victory.

Real Madrid's first chance was not long in coming. Carvajal sent a fine pass behind the opposition defence, Mbappé laid the ball back to Arda Güler and the Turkish midfielder scored at will (2'). However, the goal was disallowed because the Frenchman was millimetres offside. In the 9th minute, Carvajal once again delivered a wonderful cross into the box with the outside of his left foot, but Mbappé was unable to get a clean shot on goal. It was third time lucky for the Whites. The Frenchman latched onto a poor back pass from Goti, raced halfway up the pitch and coolly slotted past Remiro. Madrid were in control and, three minutes later, Mbappé rattled the crossbar from just inside the box.

Real Madrid go down to ten men
Real Sociedad had their best chance through Barrenetxea, who fired a shot narrowly wide from outside the box (17'). The intensity of the match continued unabated and, eight minutes later, Remiro came to his side's rescue with a stunning save to deny Militão's header. The goalkeeper produced another fine save on the half-hour mark to tip away another effort from the Brazilian following a corner. The game changed dramatically when Jesús Gil Manzano showed Huijsen a straight red card for bringing down Oyarzabal on a counter-attack where Militão was also running alongside the home side's forward. VAR did not intervene and Madrid were reduced to ten men.

Real Madrid never dropped their guard and, despite being a man down, Carvajal managed to get his head to a cross from the Turkish midfielder, but the ball hit the post (40'). And before half-time, it was 0-2. Mbappé skipped past Elustondo on the left wing and into the box to set up Arda Güler, who beat Remiro with a left-footed finish.

Hosts reduce the deficit
After the interval, Real Sociedad very nearly reduced the deficit. Pablo Marín's shot from inside the box struck Tchouameni and then hit both posts (50'). The home side began to gain a foothold in the Madrid half and, in the 54th minute, the ball hit Carvajal's hand as he attempted to clear a pass inside the box. The referee awarded a penalty and Oyarzabal converted it to make it 1-2. Mbappé looked for the third with a solo effort in which he beat two defenders and shot from the edge of the box, but the ball trickled wide of the post. The Whites defended their lead and Courtois' interventions earned the visitors a deserved three points.
