Real Madrid secured their fourth victory in the opening phase of the Champions League against Olympiacos at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Xabi Alonso's side had to come from behind after Chiquinho's early goal, but they did so thanks to a stunning performance from Mbappé, who netted a hat-trick in less than seven minutes. In the second half, when Taremi made it 2-3, the Frenchman popped up again to slot home the fourth goal after a second assist from Vini Jr., who had a remarkable game. The Greek side did not give up, however, and in the 80th minute they made it 3-4 with a header from El Kaabi.
The match began at a blistering pace, with Vini Jr. testing Tzolakis first with a shot from the edge of the box after three minutes, which the home goalkeeper parried well. The Greek side responded emphatically and took the lead with their first attack, Chiquinho scoring with a fierce long-range shot after eight minutes. The goal spurred Olympiacos on, and they almost doubled their lead 11 minutes later with another powerful shot from Chiquinho, but this time Lunin pulled off a phenomenal save.
Mbappé grabs hat-trick in less than seven minutes
It was time to bounce back, and Xabi Alonso's side did just that. In just seven minutes, 6 minutes and 43 seconds to be precise, they turned the score around with a hat-trick from Mbappé, the second fastest in Champions League history. The equaliser was a beautifully crafted goal. Vini Jr. played a pass into space with the outside of his right foot and the Frenchman made no mistake when one-on-one with Tzolakis in the 22nd minute. The second goal came from another Arda Güler-Mbappé combination. The Turkish player crossed with his right foot in the 24th minute and the Frenchman headed the ball into the net with a powerful header. And for the third goal, Camavinga assisted the number 10 to beat the home goalkeeper with a low finish.
Tchouameni hits the crossbar
These were the team's best minutes, and they found the net again after half an hour, this time through Vini Jr., but the goal was ruled out for an offside against Mbappé in the build-up. The Whites ran riot and in the 36th minute, Tchouameni's drive from the edge of the area crashed against the crossbar. Real Madrid almost extended their lead before half-time with a one-on-one chance for Vini Jr., who shot just over the bar from a tight angle. In added time, Lunin made another great save, this time from a header by El Kaabi.
The second half got off to the worst possible start for Madrid. Taremi headed home in the 52nd minute to reduce the deficit at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Six minutes later, Vini Jr., who was having a fantastic game, attempted to restore Madrid's two-goal lead with a spectacular solo run, beating three defenders in quick succession, but Tzolakis came out on top when the one-on-one. The Brazilian's persistence paid off in the 60th minute when he raced away from Retsos and provided his second assist to Mbappé, who slotted home his fourth goal.
The match was seemingly decided, but in the 80th minute, El Kaabi struck again with a header to make it 3-4. From then until the end, Xabi Alonso's side managed to preserve their lead at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, where Olympiacos pressed hard, and secured their fourth victory in this first phase of the Champions League.
