1-0: Victory against Getafe at the Bernabéu

Real Madrid defeated Getafe at the Santiago Bernabeu four days ahead of their visit to take on Manchester City in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final. A 70th-minute goal from Asensio, who fired in a fierce strike from the edge of the area, sealed all three points for the Copa del Rey champions.
 
The first half was an evenly matched affair, which saw both sides cancel each other out. The Whites bossed possession, but Getafe were well drilled in defence. Madrid welcomed back Mendy from injury who was named in the starting line-up and played the first 45 minutes. In the second half, Madrid began to press more and Ancelotti‘s side were camped around the Getafe area, although they struggled to break down a resolute defence.

The Italian coach made a triple substitution on the hour mark, introducing Vini Jr., Modrić and Mariano, and the hosts immediately moved up a gear and began to get in behind the defence. A long-range strike forced Courtois into a fine save in the 66^th minute and four minutes later the madridistas got the breakthrough. Asensio collected the ball on the edge of the box, looked up and drilled in a fierce left-footed strike that deflected off Maksimovic and past the wrong-footed Soria into the net 70’.
 
With 76 minutes on the clock, Madrid looked to double their lead, but Vini Jr. saw his effort chalked off for offside. Asensio almost bagged his brace two minutes later after a sublime left-footed pass from Kroos, but the Majorcan’s header was well beaten away by the visitors’ keeper. Ancelotti’s men saw out the victory and must now turn their attentions to the return leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
