61st anniversary of club's 9th league title
On 17 March 1963, Real Madrid clinched the title with five games remaining in the competition.
61 years ago today, Real Madrid secured their ninth league title. The championship decider was the derby at the Bernabéu against Atlético Madrid, which Madrid edged thanks to a brace from Puskas and goals by Amancio and Félix Ruiz (4-3).
That season saw Real Madrid finish in first place with 49 points. Atlético Madrid followed with 37 points. Puskas, with 26 goals, was the competition’s top goal scorer, while the Zamora trophy was won by Vicente. That Madrid team was coached by Miguel Muñoz, who won his third consecutive league title as manager.
