It was on 29 September 1988 that Real Madrid lifted their first Spanish football Super Cup. In that edition, our team, playing as league champions, faced cup-winners Barcelona.

The first leg took place on 21 September at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Madrid won thanks to goals from Míchel and Hugo Sánchez and took a 2-0 lead into the second leg. Eight days later, the madridistas lost 2-1 at the Nou Camp, but went on to win the title on aggregate.
