Valverde: “We never stopped trying and came back again”

Fede Valverde was one of the standout players in our team's victory against AEK Athens. Our captain entered the pitch in the 67th minute, replacing Diomande, and scored a stunning goal from outside the box that sealed yet another madridista comeback in the Champions League. After the match, Valverde said: “It was a very tough and complicated game, as we expected. We dominated the entire match, but it was difficult to create chances and score. We have to congratulate the team for the effort and hard work, and we must continue like this.”

Start of the match
“The goal affected us, but the team stuck to its game plan and the work we had done during the week. We regained control after conceding and felt good again, although it’s always challenging when you concede. We kept attacking and showed the same determination we've had in recent matches, so I’m happy for the whole group.”

Goals in the final minutes
“That’s credit to the coaching staff and to us as players for continuing to trust each other. The coaching staff believes in us and always gives us that extra push, that energy from the bench. It’s always a pleasure to play for them. This is evident in the final minutes. The team never stops trying. After they scored their second goal, it seemed like it would be very difficult, but the team came back once again.”

Stunning winner
“Sometimes I overthink it. As I always say, I thank my teammates, who give me the confidence to take the shot. I’m grateful to all of them for their support.”
