Álvaro Carreras joins Real Madrid
The 22-year-old left-back has joined from Benfica, where he won the League Cup last season.
Álvaro Fernández Carreras (Mallorca, 23/03/2003) has joined Real Madrid. The 22-year-old Spain under-21 international has joined from Benfica, where he stood out as a top talent. He played 68 games and scored 5 goals for the Portuguese side, and was instrumental in guiding them to the 2024/25 League Cup. In addition, he has been included in the best XI of the last Portuguese league competition by the coaches and captains.
Carreras is an energetic left-back who joined Real Madrid's youth academy in 2017, following spells at Racing Ferrol and Deportivo La Coruña. At Madrid, he played for the Under-15s, and then the Under-16s and in 2019-2020 he moved up to the Under-17s. In the summer of 2020, he signed for Manchester United, where he was voted best under-21s player in the 2021-22 season.
After a season at Preston North End and another at Granada, where he made his debut in LaLiga, Carreras joined Benfica in January 2024. In Portugal, his progress was swift and he was named the revelation player of the Lisbon team and best defender of the championship in the month of March.
