Real Madrid Castilla were held to a draw by Southampton in their second match of the Premier League International Cup, at St Mary's. Arbeloa's side were the better team and deserved to win. Thiago put the Madrid academy side ahead in the 75th minute, but the home side made it 1-1 in added time.
The academy side remain unbeaten and have four points in the competition after the first two matches. After a tense opening few minutes, Castilla took control of the game. In the 19th minute, Yáñez was brought down by Merry inside the area, but the referee did not award a penalty. The Whites sought to take the lead and, in the 24th minute, Bruno tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his shot was blocked by the opposition defence.
Ten minutes later, the English side had their best chance of the first half from a counter-attack, but Mestre saved Merry's strike inside the area. Castilla continued to press and came close to scoring before half-time. Castrelo crossed from the right wing and Álvaro Ginés let the ball pass to Yáñez, who failed to connect well.
Thiago puts Castilla ahead
The pattern of play did not change after the restart. Arbeloa's side continued to attack and apply constant pressure, forcing Southampton to defend inside their own area. After several attempts, the deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute. Following a short corner, Palacios backheeled the ball to Thiago, and the midfielder beat the opposition goalkeeper with a powerful shot from the edge of the box. Despite the Madridistas' dominance, Southampton pushed for an equaliser in the final minutes. Mestre denied them with a great save from Dipepa. But in the 94th minute, the 1-1 came. Goalkeeper Bazunu headed a corner goalwards, Mestre parried and Okunola scored from the rebound. Castilla were worthy winners in a match that ended in a draw.
