On 4 September 1960, Real Madrid celebrated their first Intercontinental Cup win over Peñarol of Montevideo. The Whites beat the winners of the Copa Libertadores in that first edition in a two-legged tie. The first leg was played in Uruguay and ended 0-0.

The second leg was at the Bernabéu, where Real Madrid ran out 5-1 winners in front of their home fans. Miguel Muñoz 's men got off to a flying start and struck three goals in the first ten minutes. Puskas, twice, and Di Stéfano, deflecting a shot from the Hungarian, were the first scorers. Herrera and Gento rounded off the scoring.
