Today marks 50 years since the comeback against Derby County
On 5 November 1975, Real Madrid won 5-1 at the Bernabéu in what has become a legendary fixture for all madridismo.
The 5th of November 1975 is an unforgettable date in Real Madrid history. It was on that day that our team faced Derby County in the second leg of the European Cup Round of 16, with the unenviable task of coming back from a 4-1 result in the English side's favour from the first leg. The madridistas had never overturned a three-goal advantage in European competition before.
Sensing an epic night, the Santiago Bernabéu's hopes were raised when the team took the lead just 3 minutes into the clash. Roberto Martínez latched onto a ball by Santillana to start the comeback. Despite a glut of chances for the madridistas, the second goal didn't come until the start of the second half. Roberto Martínez completed his brace, pouncing on a clearance from the English goalkeeper.
Magical night
Shortly afterwards, the dreams of a turnaround came true, when Santillana headed home a free-kick whipped in by Netzer. Then, a long-range strike by George on 62’ had Real Madrid staring down the barrel of European elimination again. It was time to show that this team never know when they're beaten, and as the game moved into the final ten minutes, Pirri converted a penalty won by Amancio. At 4-1, the game went to extra-time, where our boys rounded off a historic night with a Santillana stunner. The Cantabria-born ace turned the defender inside out and unleashed a wicked left-footed drive to complete one of the greatest comebacks in the club's.
