On 4 June 1980, Real Madrid won their fourteenth Copa de España crown. The Santiago Bernabéu was the venue for an all-Madrid final, as Castilla lined up as the opposition. The first team comfortably defeated the academy side with goals from Juanito (2), SantillanaSabidoDel Bosque and García Hernández, securing a double for the Whites after they had already won LaLiga.

Real Madrid, managed by Boskov, eliminated Logroñés (round of 16), Betis (quarter-finals) and Atlético Madrid (semi-finals). Meanwhile, Castilla faced Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijón in their final rounds, and were rewarded for their exploits in the tournament with qualification for the following season's European Cup Winners' Cup.
