On 4 June 1980, Real Madrid won their fourteenth Copa de España crown. The Santiago Bernabéu was the venue for a final between both madridista sides, as the opponents were Castilla. The first team comfortably defeated the academy side with goals from Juanito (2), Santillana, Sabido, Del Bosque and García Hernández, as the Whites secured a double having also won LaLiga.
Real Madrid, managed by Boskov, eliminated Logroñés (round of 16), Betis (quarter-finals) and Atlético Madrid (semi-finals). Meanwhile, Castilla faced Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijón in their final rounds, and were rewarded for their exploits in the tournament with qualification for the following season's European Cup Winners' Cup.
