On 12 December 1984, the Santiago Bernabéu was the scene of a historic comeback against Anderlecht. Real Madrid took on the Belgian side in the last 16 of the UEFA Cup. Having lost 3-0 in Brussels in the first leg, the second leg was a completely different story and the Madrid fans were treated to a memorable night.

The comeback story began with a flying start that saw Real Madrid race into a 3-0 lead in the first 30 minutes. SanchísButragueño and Valdano paved the way for the comeback with their goals. But in the 33rd minute, Frimann's goal put Anderlecht back in front. Real Madrid dug deep and before half-time Valdano made it 4-1.

Heroic Butragueño
The whole second half was left to play and Real Madrid needed one more goal to reach the quarter-finals. The goal did not take long to arrive, coming two minutes after the restart courtesy of a powerful shot from Butragueño inside the area. On this special night for Real Madrid, the club's current Director of Institutional Relations stole the show, completing his hat-trick in the 49th minute with a finish from inside the six-yard box. The final score of 6-1 sealed one of the team's greatest nights in Europe. This result allowed Madrid to continue on their path to lifting their first UEFA Cup.
