Real Madrid do not know the word impossible at their home ground, where they have come from behind to overcome difficult ties that have gone down in football history. One of the most memorable of which is the one against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup round of 16. Real Madrid lost 5-1 in the first leg but produced a prodigious second leg in which they won 4-0.

To achieve this feat, the madridistas laid siege to the German goal from the opening whistle and by the 20th minute, they had scored twice. Both goals were scored by Valdano with headers. With the home crowd pushing their team on to a heroic comeback, Santillana made it 3-0 in the second half. The Cantabrian striker was also on hand to score the decisive goal in an epic last minute.

As Juanito was taken off at 4-0, he provided an enduring image, leaping up and down enthusiastically to visibly reflect the sheer joy and excitement among the Real Madrid fans. Thanks to this comeback against Borussia, Real Madrid were able to continue on the road to their second UEFA Cup.
