On this day 40 years ago, Real Madrid won its first ever UEFA Cup. On 22 May 1985, our team lifted the trophy at The Santiago Bernabéu with a win over Hungarian side Videoton. In the first leg, the Madridistas got the final on track with a 3-0 win thanks to goals from MíchelSantillana and Valdano. This proved enough to win the trophy despite losing the return leg 1-0.

On the way to the final, Madrid knocked out Wacker Innsbruck, Rijeka, Anderlecht, Tottenham and Inter Milan. It was a historic competition that saw three unforgettable comebacks at the Santiago Bernabéu. The first was a 3-0 win over Rijeka after a 3-1 first-leg defeat. The second was even more spectacular, turning around a 3-0 first-leg deficit against Anderlecht with an emphatic 6-1 win. The team then eliminated Inter with a 3-0 victory in the semis, despite the Italians winning 2-0 in Milan. On an individual level, Santillana was the team's top scorer with 5 goals.
