Today marks the 39th anniversary of Real Madrid’s second UEFA Cup triumph in Europe. The Whites lifted the trophy at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin against FC Cologne in a two-legged final. The Germans prevailed 2-0 that day, but the Madridistas carried a bigger advantage from the first leg (5-1) to win the trophy.

A week earlier, on 30 April, Real Madrid had set themselves on track in the final at the Santiago Bernabéu with a thrashing in which Hugo SánchezGordilloValdano (2) and Santillana all featured. Along the way, they produced memorable matches, including comebacks against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the last 16 and Inter Milan in the semi-finals. In that edition, Luis Molowny's side also faced AEK Athens, Chernomorets and Neuchatel.
