On 11 June 1989, Real Madrid clinched the title at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Today marks the 36th anniversary of Real Madrid's 24th league title. On 11 June 1989, the Whites mathematically clinched the title after beating Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium (3-0), courtesy of goals from Butragueño, Hugo Sánchez and Gordillo.
Madrid won the championship on matchday 36, with two games to spare.
Real Madrid finished the 1988/89 championship, the fourth of five in a row won by the Quinta del Buitre, five points ahead of Barcelona. On an individual level, Hugo Sánchez (27 goals) was the team's top scorer in the competition. The team was managed by Leo Beenhakker and during the season also picked up the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
