Glasgow's Hampden Park hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. It was on 15 May 2002 that the Whites extended their dominance in the European Cup's honours list in the club's centenary year.
Zidane was one of the stars of the final thanks to his historic volley that made it 2-1. On the stroke of half-time, Roberto Carlos sent in a curling cross from the left wing to the edge of the area, where Zidane was on hand to strike a fantastic shot that beat the German goalkeeper. In 2020, France Football magazine selected this goal as the most beautiful in the history of the Champions League.
The start of the match was very exciting, with two goals in the first quarter of an hour. Raúl put Madrid ahead, taking advantage of a throw-in from Roberto Carlos to beat Butt. Lucio quickly equalised for Bayer after finishing off a corner.
Casillas makes the difference
In the second half, César had to go off injured. He was replaced by Casillas, who also played a key role in winning the title. In the final stages, the Germans had several clear chances to equalise, but the Real Madrid legend managed to save them all and secure Real Madrid's ninth European Cup.
