Today marks the 49th anniversary of Real Madrid's first Intercontinental Cup basketball victory. On 4 October 1976, the Whites were crowned champions in Buenos Aires after finishing top of a six-team league. Two more consecutive titles would follow in 1977 and 1978.
Real Madrid, coached at the time by Lolo Sainz, won all five games and topped the table ahead of Mobilgirgi Varese. The team beat Amazonas Franca Brasil on the first matchday (83-70); ASFA Dakar on the second (89-51); Obras Sanitarias on the third (109-89); the Italians on the fourth (79-74), in what would be the decisive match as both teams had three wins; and the Missouri Tigers on the last (97-102).
