On 24 June 1978, Real Madrid won their third Intercontinental Basketball Cup. This edition was held in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and Real Madrid competed alongside the Brazilian side Sirio, the Italian side Pallacanestro Varese, the American side University of Rhode Island and the Argentine side Obras Sanitarias. Our team and the hosts both won their first three matches, meaning the title was decided on the final day in a head-to-head clash between them.
Coughran, with 26 points, Brabender (25) and Szczerbiak (24) were Real Madrid’s standout performers in the victory over Obras Sanitarias, but it was a basket by Prada with two seconds remaining that set the final score at 103–104. This triumph added further lustre to a 1978 season in which the team had also won the European Cup a few months earlier. Furthermore, it was the third consecutive Intercontinental Cup that Real Madrid had won.
