On 15 June 1985, Real Madrid added another trophy to their honours list. The Whites secured the Copa de la Liga, a competition they played in for four seasons, between 1983 and 1986. Just like the play-offs, the final was played over two legs and Madrid came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 3-2 in the first leg and won the trophy in the second leg with a 2-0 win.

PinedaSantillanaStielike and Míchel were on target for the Madridistas in the final, but on the road to winning the league cup trophy, Real Madrid also had to beat Barcelona and Sporting Gijón in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively. Luis Molowny's side lifted their second trophy of the season, having previously won their first UEFA Cup.
