38 years ago, we won our 22nd football league title
On 14 June 1987, Real Madrid won the title with a 1-3 victory over Zaragoza.

Today marks 38 years since Real Madrid won our 22nd league title. On 14 June 1987, the team mathematically sealed the title after beating Zaragoza at La Romareda (1-3) on the penultimate matchday. The Madridistas won with a brace from Butragueño and a goal from Solana.
That 1986/87 edition had a different format, as it included a final playoff system. Having been the best team in the first 34 matchdays, Real Madrid led the top six teams, who played each other again to decide the champion. At the end of the longest league, consisting of 44 matches, Real Madrid had the most points (66) ahead of Barcelona (63).
Hugo Sánchez, top scorer
Real Madrid were the top scorers in the championship with 84 goals and Hugo Sánchez won the league’s Pichichi Trophy with 34 goals. That squad was coached by Leo Beenhakker, who in his debut season in the dugout, won the first of his three league titles.
