Nineteen years without Puskas
One of the greatest forwards in football history passed away on 17 November 2006.
Ferenc Puskas passed away, at the age of 79, on 17 November 2006. On that day, Real Madrid and the footballing world lost one of the greatest strikers of all time. The Hungarian player became a global legend thanks to his goalscoring ability, forming part of a dream strikeforce at Real Madrid alongside Di Stéfano, Kopa, Rial and Gento.
Puskas arrived at our club at the age of 31. His performances helped to bring about one of Real Madrid's most successful eras. As a madridista, Puskas won 3 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 5 Spanish League titles and 1 Spanish Cup. He scored 242 goals in 262 games and remains one of the greatest goalscorers in Real Madrid history.
World footballing legacy
Among his unforgettable moments as a Real Madrid player, is the final of the fifth European Cup, in which he scored four goals against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960. This is still the greatest single performance in a final of Europe's top competition. As a tribute to his career, a bust of Puskas stands in Real Madrid City, while FIFA named the trophy for the best goal of the year (Puskas Award) after him.
