Amancio's legacy at Real Madrid also extends to his time as a coach. He led Castilla from 1982 to 1984 and won the Second Division title in his second season. A achievement that no other reserve team has ever managed to achieve in the history of the competition.

Amancio's work was key to the development of one of Real Madrid's great generations: la Quinta del Buitre. One of the standout players in that Castilla team that won the second division was ButragueƱo, top scorer with 21 goals. Amancio's success with the reserve team saw him coach the first team for much of the 1984/85 season, where he helped to establish this legendary group of academy players in the elite.
