On 15 July 1989, Laurie Cunningham lost his life in a road traffic accident in the outskirts of Madrid. Born in London on 8 March 1956, he was 33 years old at the time, having played for our club between 1979 and 1982. An England international, he came to Madrid from West Bromwich Albion, where he had made a name for himself thanks to his elegance, quick feet and versatility in the forward positions.

He made 66 appearances as a madridista, netting 20 goals. During his time at Real Madrid he won 1 LaLiga title and 2 Spanish Cups. Among his most memorable moments was the sublime El Clásico performance at the Camp Nou in February 1980.
